Serbia expects deal on railroad, talks on industrial zones

Speaking about the upcoming summit of prime ministers of Central and Eastern European countries and China in Belgrade, Mihajlovic said that she does not consider it inappropriate to compare the diplomatic activity of the current government and its prime mister "with the period of the reign of Josip Broz Tito."

The gathering will be the largest in Belgrade since the Non-Aligned Summit in 1977, she observed.

"During the past six months the prime minister has been having meetings with the most important countries on a weekly basis, either he goes there or they come here," said Mihajlovic.

Asked what was so special about Serbia to prompt "everyone to come here," she replied:

"We have a very special thing, our position, Serbia is exactly on the line between the east and the west, the quickest way to Europe is through Serbia."

Mihajlovic expects that the summit will produce agreements with the Chinese delegation primarily on the modernization of the Belgrade-Budapest railroad, and will also include talks about industrial zones, and with the China Development Bank.

She said that Serbia can no longer take loans to finance projects, but will try to make arrangements with the Chinese side to use another model of investment, "such as concessions or some other form of financing."

The minister added that projects with Chinese investors are already underway in Serbia as a result of the previous summit, and in accordance with the decision of China to set aside USD 10 billion for investments in this region.

She cited the construction of the Zemun-Borca bridge over the Danube in Belgrade as an example, as well as investments in the Kostolac thermal power plant, and the participation of Chinese companies in the construction of a section of Corridor 11.

Mihajlovic explained that after the two-day summit ends on Wednesday, the Chinese prime minister will begin his official visit to Serbia, during which several important agreements are expected to be signed.
