MPs in the Serbian parliament adopted Monday a resolution on parliament's role and principles in Serbia's accession negotiations with the EU.

BELGRADE MPs in the Serbian parliament adopted Monday a resolution on parliament's role and principles in Serbia's accession negotiations with the EU. The resolution states that one of the country's major objectives is to obtain a full-fledged membership of the EU as soon as possible. MPs adopt resolution on parliament's role on EU path The resolution, which contains a preamble and 27 points, was voted in with a total of 158 votes in favor and nine against, all by MPs of the opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS). The preamble says that Serbia will keep maintaining its territorial integrity and sovereignty and have as a goal respect for its tradition and protection of culture and language as the foundation of national identity. The parliament calls on the government, which is responsible for leading and coordinating the EU accession talks, to do the job in a responsible and efficient manner, taking care to protect national interests. The parliament is playing an active role to contribute to a successful leading and completing, as soon as possible, of Serbia's accession negotiations with the EU, recognizing and promoting the values and principles which lay at the foundation of the EU. The resolution stresses the importance of the implementation of the Stabilization and Accession Agreement (SAA), adding that the Serbian parliament will be actively cooperating with the European Parliament, national parliaments of EU member-states and parliaments of states taking part in the Stabilization and Accession Process (SAP) to help present Serbia's position and interests better. One of the points in the resolution says that an efficient cooperation between the parliament, government and the country's president in Serbia's accession process is essential if all the necessary political, economic legal and institutional criteria for EU membership are to be fulfilled in the shortest time possible.
