“Serbian citizens should serve their sentences in Serbia”

BELGRADE We will request at the UN session to allow our citizens convicted by the Hague Tribunal to be transferred to Serbian prisons, FM Ivan Mrkic has stated. “We will touch on the number of Serbs who have been convicted in the Hague Tribunal and a tragic disproportion in that sense,” said the minister who will partake in a delegation led by President Tomislav Nikolic. “Serbian citizens should serve their sentences in Serbia” The Serbian delegation will attend and speak at a UN General Assembly session on the work of the Hague Tribunal on April 10. “The Tribunal was established in order to reconcile people who were a part of a sovereign state and to punish individuals so the guilt would not be transferred to the entire people. However, something completely opposite has happened, which can hardly lead to a reconciliation – the Tribunal has turned into something opposite,” Mrkic told daily Vecernje novosti. “Of course, President Nikolic will this time, just like all the times do far, request that our citizens serving their sentences worldwide be transferred to our prisons, so their families do not have to go bankrupt in order to visit them,” he underscored.
