BELGRADE Culture and Information Minister Bratislav Petkovic says a new law on public information and media will enable the state to withdraw from the media ownership. This will happen "in given deadlines", the minister told a gathering in Belgrade on Tuesday. State to withdraw from media ownership “This will not mean the lack of state responsibility and realization of public interest in the area of public information,” Petkovic underlined in the public debate on the draft law on public information and media. “We will endeavor to allocate much more fund for this sector in the next budget year,” Petkovic said, speaking about the project financing of the media. “The state structures on any level will no longer exert pressure on the media as it was the case in the past,” Petkovic said. He underlined that the state will be responsible, and that it will also be a guarantor of freedom and independence of the media, adding that the media is in the service of all citizens. Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert welcomed the fact that the draft implies the state's withdrawal from the media, and that in future the state should finance the media only through projects under equal and transparent conditions. The direct budget subsidies to the state media are a serious problem from the viewpoint of free competition and equal approach to the market, he said. "I would like to underline that any kind of financing from public funds, the budget and public administration at all levels is a kind of state assistance, which is strictly defined by the EU rules," Degert said.
