Vojislav Kostunica has voiced his opinion that following elections - expected this spring - a new government should declare political and military neutrality. That would mean putting an end to the current state policy aimed at Serbia's future EU membership, said the leader of the opposition DSS party and the country's former prime minister for two terms. "Next govt. should declare political neutrality" “Political neutrality, as the name implies, does not mean that Serbia would be against the EU or any other, but on the contrary, that the country wants to further develop economic cooperation with the EU member states, and with all other countries,” Kostunica said in an interview for the Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. He is of the opinion that “the EU of yesterday will not exist any more,” and added that it is quite uncertain “whether it will be re-structured in two or more tiers and whether it will exist at all.” When asked why he dismisses the possibility of future cooperation with the Democratic Party (DS) and other ruling parties but not with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Kostunica said that “the ruling coalition has linked its fate to the EU, and the fact that Serbia is decaying due to that means nothing to them.” “Our policy and that of the DS differ on practically all issues. We are ready to engage in serious talks with the SNS, in which we would present our arguments as to why Serbia's future lies in political neutrality,” he said. Kostunica stressed that he supports a referendum in northern Kosovo-Metohija, noting that in line with the democratic principles, citizens have the right to voice their opinion in a referendum. The DSS leader added that the government should hear “the voice of its people, instead of turning against it.” Vojislav Kostunica (Tanjug, file) Tanjug Vecernje novosti
