Actually this statement is a concession to election planners in DSS concerned that people see DSS as a party that only likes to say no, but never puts forward any alternatives. No doubt as this 'policy' backfires he will bitterly complain that he should never have listened to advice, better to make his personal character traits DSS policy.

So we have a neat, new (old, read Titoist / Jugoslav) plan of independence, or in other words a posher way to refuse further EU integration and (hopefully) to get into the good graces of Russia.

Always brimming with new ideas that man Kostunica, nothing of the dinosaur about him at all...

@Alb side

The only one doing the tricking is the US and it's puppet regime in Kosovo.. The US is not there for "support".. They are there for hegemony, or do you know know what that word means??

You do realize that Kosovo is run by a crime syndicate?? A drug running, human organ trafficking terror organization. You do know that the same goverment the US you cliamed to be there for "support" had listed the KLA is an outright terrorist organization the 90s before they became useful geopolitically.. You do know that right??

I think most of Mr. Kostunica's ideas are unworkable and will not be good for Serbia. First, Serbia is politically dependent on Russia so the very idea of political "neutrality" is impossible as long as Serbia's perceived ability to hold on to Kosovo rests on Russia's political goodwill towards Serbia (read client state status). Wether Serbia joins the EU or not is not really relevant. Serbia does not meet most of the economic, political, and cultural requirements to be part of the EU and is more in line with joining a future Russian-led "League of non-European Asian Nations" type of organization that might exist in the future. He should also realize that all of Serbia's neighbors are joining NATO and the EU and that they have chosen which team they want to play on and that in ten years time this will leave Serbia very isolated in its own neighborhood and given the deep distrust that exists between all of Serbia's neighbors and Serbia will lead to Serbia being seen as an outcast and as an anomalous state. It might also lead to future instability as minority groups inside Serbia start forming closer ties with EU and NATO member states and demand more autonomy from Belgrade. Allignment with Russia and China might sound nice but in reality it's just a pipe dream, Russia is economically broke and there is nothing that China wants from Serbia except to get more lucrative contracts to exploit whatever natural resources Serbia might have and to produce more jobs for Chinese workers. Overall, Kustunica's ideas are unworkable and will not lead to any improvements in Serbia's already dire circumstances.

dont think that for a country like Serbia; that neutrality is the best idea. In World War 1 it was because Serbia was aligned with Russia that it survived, while in World War 2, Yugoslavia's non alignment was a total failure, In Yugoslavia's collapse, it was due to Yugo's non alignment that western powers were able to pull it apart.
(New Zealander, 7 February 2012 19:26)
Apparently you are unfamiliar with the Serbian definition of neutrality. When Kostunica says that Serbia should become politically and militarily neutral it SHOULD align itself with Russia, while backing away from the west. Just as Serbs view being "status neutral" as supporting Serbia's stance, on the status of Kosovo issue.

Kosovo has stepped up their game bc they don't want to be tricked by Serbs, but the ball is in your court if you notice.albanians are afraid of Serbs lol. The ameircans are there for support. If you ve noticed, the Eu and US have warmed to the idea of a mutual solution. Serbs will want to secede with the referendum, the Albanians will repect that. You will see. When you start the separation/reconciliation/peace efforts like now, you are now in a leadership position with Albanians and the area. Have faith

The EU isn't stable and might collapse. That's just the reality.. The next president has to fix the economy. That's the number one priority. After that everything else is secondary.. The problem you can't negoitate with the puppet goverment in Kosovo.. It's their way or the highway as dictated by their master in Washington.

Kostunica is finally shifting to the moderate middle of the political spectrum, instead of expressing his patriotism in an extremist way.
He's right on.
"Koštunica stressed that he supports a referendum in northern Kosovo-Metohija, noting that in line with the democratic principles, citizens have the right to voice their opinion in a referendum. The DSS leader added that the government should hear “the voice of its people, instead of turning against it.”

Tadic has been very courageous and asphalted new roads where few others have dared before. God sees everything, he has risked so much. I hope one day, his efforts to wake people up to reality, his perserverance against adversity are recognized by the country, Balkans and beyond.

This is what will happen if the EU spoil the current opportunity by linking the invasion of Kosovo with Serbia joining the EU.

The EU should keep the issues separate.

The EU should welcome Serbia with open arms while there is still time.

Why does Kostunica speak of neutrality? There is Serbia as part of the EU, and there is the Serbia of his nationalistic dreams. How is his idea of Serbia neutral? He is simply playing on people's fears that the EU is not economically stable, and not able to offer a better future for Serbs. He is hoping that Serbs have already forgotten what he did for the country while he was prime minister, nothing. The EU is relatively new, and needs to be given the opportunity to prove itself. Serbia needs to join simply because the hope of legitimate government and public institutions are better than what Kostunica is offering.

Kostunica has good intentions but he needs to keep away from the SNS. The SNS may be opposed to Tadic but they speak the same crap, and are still intent on EU membership, sellouts just like the DS. The DSS would be better off in a nationalist coalition with the SRS and other nationalist groups.
