EU membership talks, "by next elections"

Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic said on Wednesday he expected Serbia to enter EU accession negotiations by the end of the current government's mandate. After EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule presented Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic with the European Commission questionnaire, Djelic told Tanjug he believed the government and the people would now work towards EU membership just as hard as they did in order to be able to travel to the Schengen area without EU visas. According to Djelic, the questionnaire is neutral in terms of Kosovo, Serbia's breakaway province, which means the country could gain the status of a candidate for EU membership by the end of 2011 and should begin accession negotiations by the end of the current government's mandate. When asked about the commission's objections to Serbia's reforms, Djelic said they mostly referred to the justice system reform and to whether parliament member mandates were given to the members themselves or to their parties, which should be settled through election laws. The government should also focus on structural reforms and the fight against corruption and organized crime, Djelic noted.
