The Serbian police (MUP) Special Antiterrorist Unit (SAJ) today marked St. Michael the Archangel, its patron saint day. The unit's base in the Belgrade suburb of Batajnica welcomed Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, and three Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) bishops: Irinej, Grigorije and Longin. Bishop Grigorije reminded that Michael the Archangel called on angels "to stand up straight" when evil spirits rose up against God. "We can see that in our nation, there are young and healthy people who will always find a commander such as your commander – and we found this out in the last war – who will know how to say, let's stand up straight, stand up before God, before justice and truth and that will be the real victory," he addressed the SAJ officers present. "And good will always triumph, and good people will always triumph, and healthy people such as yourselves will always triumph," said the bishop. Dacic reflected on the funeral earlier this week of Serbian Patriarch Pavle, which drew a crowd of over 600,000 people, to say that police had demonstrated it can be an integral part of the people, and help the organization without being too visible. "This police belongs to no one. It's a police of the nation and state. The funeral showed that in the general confusion of values, there are values above that, and police is protecting those values," he continued. The minister reminded that SAJ is MUP's elite formation, and that 1,000 of its members that fell in the past 20 years must also be remembered. Dacic added that SAJ and the rest of police are fighting for "peace among people, against violence, crime, corruption, protecting against terrorism and all the evils of the modern world". "May God bless and protect you," Dacic addressed the SAJ commanders and officers, "and may you in turn protect Serbia, make sure it has as little crime and corruption possible, and that the Serb people and all citizens live in peace."
