Parliament will continue its discussions on the proposed Asylum Law today. Explaining the law proposal, Interior Minister Dragan Jocic said last night that it involved the creation of an Asylum Office, Commission, and Center by the ministry, government and Commissariat for Refugees respectively. Parliament to discuss asylum law “The best European practice for protecting the state and asylum seekers is built into the proposal. Adopting the law is one of the conditions for EU membership and getting on the white Schengen list. The law will be ready for implementation by April 1, 2008,” Jocic said. The proposal regulates principles; conditions and procedure for receiving and terminating asylum; rights; position and obligations of both asylum seekers and those to whom asylum has already been granted in Serbia. While Socialists Party of Serbia and Serb Radical Party MPs have proposed close to 100 amendments to the law, the Liberal Democratic Party has announced its support.
