Musliu calls for boycott

“Although the agreement on solving the Valley Albanians’ problems by political means was reached, the status of Albanians in this region is still the same, with minor improvements”, Musliu says.

According to him, integration of Albanians into local institutions and the region’s demilitarization never happened, adding that the number of troops deployed “in fact increased”.

“Apart from a few cases, Valley Albanians were never compensated for the damage done to their property in 1999 and 2000, which is one of the major obstacles for the return of the displaced Albanians, not to mention the state of education, social welfare and tax policy, which discriminates the Albanians”, Musliu says.

He says those were some of the reasons that prompted his party to boycott the January 21 vote. Rumors about possible pressure against those Albanians who choose to participate in the elections have been rife in the south lately, but Musliu claims that he opposes any such moves.

“Pressure and intimidation are not the democratic means for reaching a political goal. Each party has a right to its own position on any issue, elections included. The fact that there are two parties that will take part in the elections does not make them traitors”, Musliu concluded.
