New international country code debate

The Institute made a proposal to the ministries of Science and Foreign Affairs that the two-letter code should be SP, and the three-letter variant SPA. SP was suggested as incorporating the letters from the word “srpski” (Serbian) and other proposals contained the letters from the word “Srbija” (Serbia), with SR, SB, SI, SJ and SA already taken.

Krstić said that the only available options starting with an S include SQ, SS, SW and SX, as well as RS which is directly related to the country’s name – The Republic of Serbia. The latter is also backed by the Ministry of Science, allegedly a solution supported by the entire Serbian internet community. The ministry did not suggest the three-letter code.

Srđan Srećković, Serbian Renewal Movement representative, said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will most likely propose SRB as the three-letter code.

“If we cannot reach an agreement in the first round of the debate that will be backed by both ministries, we will call for the urgent direct harmonization until we reach consensus”, Krstić explained.
