Federal parliament building officially Serbian

Predrag Marković, the parliament speaker, told the audience at the building’s hall, that the construction was finished a hundred years ago, and that in the meantime, two Balkan and two World wars took place, as well as nine states before the building at Nikola Pašić Square in Belgrade became the Serbian parliament. “No matter how much evil, how many wars and economic misery, no matter what we to do today and tomorrow and what our representatives are negotiating about, all of us must consider what will be in a hundred years from now”, Markovi ć said.

“If it took us a hundred years to turn the House of popular representation into the Serbian parliament, we must be careful about a similar pace in other areas. It is our duty to secure that all that belongs to the citizens of Serbia and the state of Serbia must continue to be Serbian a hundred years from today”, the Parliament speaker said. He stressed that the two halls in which sessions will take place, decorated for the first time with Serbian coats-of-arms, will house different sessions, defined by amendments to the Parliamentary rules.

Head of the G17 Plus parliamentary group Miloljub Albijanić told the reporters that entrance into the building signifies institutional building of the state and reminded the present that the state of Serbia has been in existence for the past 1 300 years. “Our state did pass though different stages but we have this historical dimension of our statehood which is stronger than that of many states in the region”, Albijanić said, adding that solving the problems of the general population, and building a state associated with the EU is what must now top the agenda.

Representatives of the Democratic party (DS) and the Serbian Radical party (SRS) did not attend the raising of the Serbian flag in front of the Serbian parliament.

Citizens who wish to tour the parliament building will be able to do so today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
