Serbia expects wheat crop of 1.88mn tons The data on the expected production of wheat presented on May 25, 2011, showed that this year's crop of bread wheat in Serbia will be by 8.1 percent lower compared to the ten-year average (2001-2010). It is estimated that the expected wheat crops, along with the stock transferred from the previous season, will provide self-sustainability in the supply of the domestic population, and about 300,000 tons available for export, associate at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) Vojislav Stankovic has stated. According to the Statistical Office, a total of 1.26 million hectares were sown with corn, which is by 2.1 more compared to the previous year, and 177,424 with sunflower, which is by four percent more than last year. Soy was sown on 166,134 hectares, and sugar beet on 56,570 hectares, which is a 15.5, that is 15,3 percent reduction respectively compared to 2010. Compared to ten-year average, the sowing of sugar beet reduced by 7.7 percent, and of maize increased by 3.8 percent. According to the data of the Statistical Office, the raspberry production was expected to increase by 13.9 percent (estimated production 95,565 tons), and cherries by 33.3 percent (estimated production 88,274 tons). However, hailstorms that on June 24 hit western Serbia - where the highest quality raspberry is grown - inflicted considerable damaged, Stankovic stated. According to certain estimates, raspberry crop could reduce by 20-22 percent, that is 20,000 tons, and total 75,000 tons, he specified. Stankovic said that a crop reduction of 20-25 percent could be expected with all types of fruit. (Beta)
