Drama on the Atlantic: The search for the missing submarine is still ongoing

There are five people in the submarine.

Contact with the small submarine was lost about an hour and 45 minutes after it dived on Sunday. A rescue operation has been launched, but so far there is no sign of the submarine, the BBC reported.

As of Monday afternoon, the crew were thought to have had about four days' worth of oxygen left.

Among the passengers of the submarine is the British billionaire, businessman and researcher, Hamish Harding. "Right now, our focus is on as many opportunities as possible in that area," US Coast Guardsman John Mauger said at a news conference.

The wreck of the Titanic lies about 700 kilometers south of St. John's, Newfoundland, at a depth of 3,800 meters. The US Coast Guard said a research vessel called the Polar Prince conducted a surface search for the submarine on Monday night.

Taking to social media over the weekend, Harding said he was "proud to finally announce" that he would be on a mission to the wreck of the Titanic. Harding pointed out that because of Newfoundland's worst winter in 40 years, that mission will likely be the first and only mission on the Titanic this year.

"Titanic", which was the largest and most luxurious ship of its time, hit an iceberg in 1912, on the way from Southampton, England to New York, and sank. About 700 of the approximately 2,200 passengers and crew survived.

The wreck was discovered in 1985 and has been the subject of research and sightseeing ever since. Harding is an adventurer who holds three Guinness World Records, including the longest stay at full ocean depth in a manned submarine, AP reported.

In March 2021, Harding and ocean explorer Victor Vescovo dived to the greatest depth in the world, in the Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific. Harding also flew into space in June 2022 on the Blue Origin New Shepard rocket.

The ship carrying the Titan submarine departed from St. John's, Canada, on Saturday and arrived near the site of the Titanic wreck on Sunday morning, where the submarine was to begin its mission.
