Alert in the sky: Fighter jets raised
This was announced today by the government in Taipei. The incursion involved 43 Chinese aircraft that crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial buffer zone between Taiwan and China that lies within the defense zone, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said, Reuters reported.
Beijing is reportedly continuing military activities near the islands claimed by China, and Taiwan's official Central News Agency said it was the largest incursion by the Chinese air force into Taiwan's airspace to date.
Some of the Chinese planes, mostly fighter planes, briefly crossed the median line in the sensitive Taiwan Strait, and seven Chinese navy ships were detected near Taiwan, the Taiwanese ministry said.
China said it conducted "strike drills" in the sea and airspace around Taiwan on Sunday in response to what it said were provocations by Taiwan and the US.
Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen pointed out this morning, in a speech at a military ceremony, that Taiwan needs to strengthen its defense capacity due to, as she said, "the continuous expansion of authoritarianism", although she did not mention China's latest military activities.
