The fire department in Greece said rescue teams are searching for six people whose disappearance has been reported due to heavy flash flooding near Athens.

At least 14 people die in flash floods in Athens

The rescue and search operation is being carried out today in the Mandra area in the western part of the Greek capital, where yesterday huge floods after a heavy rainstorm turned roads into torrents of mud and debris that slammed cars into buildings, Tanjug reported, citing AP.

The Greek government declared Thursday day of mourning, and schools in that area remain closed for the second day.

According to earlier reports, 15 people died, while 17 were injured.

"These are very difficult moments for Greece, we are experiencing a major catastrophe," Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in his address to the public, Reuters said earlier.

He stated that support measures for vulnerable households and businesses will be adopted immediately and without delay.

The agency ANA, referring to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, reported that ten men and five women were among the victims. while 11 men and six women were injured.
