"There have been at least 5 attempts at Putin's life"

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told US filmmaker Oliver Stone that he was the target of several assassination attempts.

"There have been at least 5 attempts at Putin's life"

"Not as much as Castro, who I've interviewed. I think he must have had about 50. But there's a legitimate five I've heard about."

"Yes, I talked with Castro about that. And he said to me, 'Do you know why I'm still alive?' I asked him, 'Why?' 'Because I was always the one to deal with my security personally.' But yeah, I do my job. And the security officers do theirs and they are still performing quite successfully. I trust them," Putin said.

Stone then observed that "the first mode of an assassination is to try to get inside the security of the president."

"I know that. Do you know what they say among the Russian people? They say that those who are destined to be hanged are not going to drown," Putin replied.

Asked whether he "knew what his destiny was," Putin replied: "Only God knows our destiny - yours and mine."

The conversation, that took place during the filming of Stone's upcoming four-part documentary that will air on Showtime network June 12-15, also touched on spying.

Asked to "evaluate the effectiveness of Russia’s intelligence service," Putin replied: "I think they work quite well. Our security agencies operate strictly according to the law."

"That’s the first thing. The other thing is that it is inappropriate to spy on your allies, if you really consider them to be allies and not vassals. It undermines trust and at the end of the day damages your own national security," Putin said.

Speaking about former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the Russian president said:

"Snowden is not a traitor, he did not betray the interests of his country, nor did he transfer any information to any other country that could have harmed his people. Everything that he does, he does publicly."

But, the Russian leader thinks Snowden "should have simply quit if he didn’t like something at his job."

"But he went further. That’s his right. But since you’re asking me if he did the right thing, I would say no, he did not," Putin said.

When Stone asked if Putin thought the NSA had gone too far in its eavesdropping, he replied, "Of course they did. In this regard, Snowden is right."
