Doctor Lisa Bardack, who examined Clinton in her home, said on Sunday that the presidential candidate was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday and that she "became overheated and dehydrated" during the event, but was now recovering well.

In August, Bardack described her patient as being "in excellent health and ready to perform presidential duties."

Clinton has now canceled a trip to California and will miss some of her campaign duties due to the illness, her staff has announced.

Video footage posted on Twitter shows Clinton stumbling and members of her team helping her into a van. Clinton suffered a concussion in 2012, and was diagnosed with having a blood clot.

Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, has many times in the past raised the issue of Clinton's heath, telling his supporters in August that she "lacked physical and mental stamina to fight Islamic State," while members of his team and Republican Party supporters accused Clinton's campaign of lying about the true state of her health.

Media reports suggest that Sunday's episode could become a decisive factor in the campaign, as the Republicans are expected to use it as a confirmation of their claims.

According to a CNN/ORC poll, 70-year-old Trump currently has a small advantage over Clinton, who is 68.

Presidential elections will be held in the United States on November 8.
