Some 61 percent voted against while 38 percent were in favor in a referendum organized on the deal "already ratified by the rest of the continent," the French agency said.

The official result will be announced on April 12. According to reports on Thursday, the turnout was 32 percent. At least 30 percent of voters had to turn out to make the referendum valid.

Reuters is reporting that the Dutch government announced "it could not ignore the resounding 'no' in the non-binding referendum - but that it may take weeks to decide how to respond."

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said that Kiev would "under any circumstances" continue to implement the association agreement with the European Union, "including a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement."

A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry representative said the referendum was “advisory in nature” while the final decision on ratification was up to the Dutch government.
