Putin reveals how Crimea was "returned to Russia"

"I convened heads of our special services, the Ministry of Defense, in the Kremlin, and tasked them with saving the life of the president of Ukraine (Viktor Yanukovych), because he would have been just killed," RIA Novosti quoted Putin.

“Heavy machine guns were mounted to avoid too much talk. We were ready to get him directly out of Donetsk by land, by sea or by air (...) That happened between the 22nd and the 23rd (February 2014), we finished (the meeting) at about seven in the morning. As we were parting, I said to my colleagues: we are forced to start the activities to return Crimea to Russia," the president told the documentary's authors.

Rossiya-1 showed the trailer, and announced that the program will be broadcast "soon," but did not specify a date.

RIA Novosti noted in its report that Crimea refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new authorities formed in Kiev in February 2014 and held a referendum the next month, when 96.77 percent of those who turned out voted to join the Russian Federation.

The other option offered in the referendum was for the peninsula to renew the validity of the Republic of Crimea's Constitution from 1992 and its status as a part of Ukraine.
