German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that the agreement in Minsk was "a ray of hope" but that "much work remains to be done."

Merkel sees "ray of hope" in Minsk deal

Merkel also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had to "put pressure on the rebels" in order for them to agree to a ceasefire.

German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier was also cautious after the marathon negotiations in the Belarus capital.

"The agreement is not a great breakthrough, but it could be the first step in preventing further escalation in Ukraine," he said.

French President Francois Hollande said that the deal gives "serious hope" that the crisis may be resolved.

"This represents serious hope and a great relief for Europe," he has been quoted as saying, and adding that "much work remains to be done in order to implement the agreement.
