Crimea assembly votes to join Russian Federation

In Moscow, Duma Vice-President and official of the ruling United Russia party Sergei Neverov said the decision was "historic."

"We are one nation split because of (Communist) party officials' irresponsibility,” he told Itar-Tass.

Earlier in the day it was announced that a referendum on Crimea's future status would be held on March 16.

Itar-Tass noted in its report that President Vladimir Putin said earlier Russia had no plans to include Crimea in its borders, and that "only the citizens themselves can and should determine their future."

On Thursday, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the president had been informed about the decision of the Crimea assembly.

"This news just arrived, and it has been reported to the president," he said, providing no further details.

The Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed in 1921 as part of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic, but in 1954, it was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, at the initiative of Communist Party Secretary General Nikita Khrushchev.

Crimea now has 1.9 million residents, a majority of them Russians (58.5 percent), followed by Ukrainians (24.3 percent) and Tatars (12.1 percent.)
