NATO suspends cooperation with Russia

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that NATO had until further notice suspended regular contacts with Russia on civilian and military level.

NATO suspends cooperation with Russia

Rasmussen said that the suspension of relations was due to Russia's "violation of international obligations and violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

He explained that one of the joint missions that was canceled was the participation of the Russian Navy in the disposal of the Syrian chemical weapons by a U.S. ship.

Rasmussen noted that the weapons would be destroyed as planned, but there would be no Russian ships involved in the escort.

He also announced that NATO would intensify partnership with Ukraine and raise it to a higher level, but that Ukraine's membership in the western military alliance was not yet on the agenda.

NATO's decision to limit cooperation with Russia could have the boomerang effect, said Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO Aleksandr Grushko.

Russia's representative accused the alliance of double standards and Cold War stereotypes against Russia.

NATO's meddling in the crisis in Ukraine "will only complicate the situation," Grushko said, adding that Russia's position at the meeting was that neither NATO nor the Council should be involved in the resolution of the crisis.

The Russian side, according to the diplomat, called on its partners in the NATO-Russia Council to use their influence to help the Ukrainian opposition distance itself from radicals and condemn all forms of antisemitism, nationalism and Russophobia, persecution of political opponents, the taking the administrative buildings and anarchist violence, reported Itar-Tass.
