WASHINGTON, MOSCOW U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last night that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime still had time to step down. “We believe it is not too late for al-Assad’s regime to plan the transfer of power that will allow us to find a way to end violence,” Clinton told reporters, adding that the “the pace of events in Syria is speeding up”. Clinton: Not too late for Syrian president to leave The U.S. has been insisting for the past several weeks that the Syrian leader “needs to leave” and that he should not be involved in the transfer of power. Clinton warned that the Syrian opposition fighters “are becoming better organized and they are taking important parts of the territory”. “The opposition should be ready to start working on a transitional government. It needs to protect human rights of everybody in Syria, of all groups… It needs to protect the biological and chemical weapons owned by the Syrian regime,” she warned. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that the U.S. is “justifying terrorism” with its attitude toward the Syrian opposition, AFP has reported. Lavrov lashed out at Washington for its failure to condemn the July 18 blast in Damascus that killed top security officials. “This is quite an awful position, I cannot even find the words to make clear how we feel. This is directly justifying terrorism,” he stressed. The rebels accused the Syrian regime of deploying chemical weapons alongside borders on Tuesday. Damascus threatened earlier it would use the weapons in “case of aggression from outside”. Fighting started in the city of Aleppo on Tuesday while the army continued to fortify its positions in Damascus after almost a week of fighting with the rebels. The opposition has stated that the regime forces killed around 30 worshippers while they were going to an afternoon prayer at a mosque in a village northeast from the city of Hama.
