Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano praised the American cartoon TV show The Simpsons. L'Osservatore Romano states that The Simpsons are among the few TV shows for children in which Christianity, religion, and questions about God are frequently discussed. Vatican: Homer Simpson is Catholic The daily says that "issues such as family, community, education and religion are expolored in the show in a way that few other popular television programs can match." "Homer's behavior is sometimes unacceptable", the article "Homer and Bart are Catholics" reads, as "he sometimes snores through the sermons of the Reverend Lovejoy and does not miss an opportunity to humiliate his God-fearing neighbor, Ned Flanders." The Simpsons "pray before meals and, in their own way, believe in the afterlife", the Vatican daily writes and tells about a 2005 episode of The Simpsons, which talked about Catholicism and was aired shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II. The episode starts with Bart being enrolled in a Catholic school where he meets a kind priest who draws him and his father into Catholicism. The episode reflects on issues of religious conflict, interfaith dialogue, homosexuality and stem cell research. "Few people know it, and he does everything he can to hide that fact, but it is true: Homer Simpson is a Catholic," L'Osservatore Romano points out. It is not the first time that the Vatican newspaper has praised the show: last December, as the The Simpsons celebrated its 20th anniversary, the paper said that "the relationship between man and God" is one of its most important topics in the show and that it often reflects the "religious and spiritual confusion that we are living in today." L'Osservatore Romano has delved into popular culture topics three years ago when it got a new editor, commenting on everything from The Beatles and The Blues Brothers to the Holywood blockbusters such as Avatar and the Harry Potter.
