Anderson also thanked Putin for imposing a ban on the killing of baby seals in Russia. Putin, whose country tops the list of Canadian seal fur importers, is seen as an animal lover and campaigner for wildlife protection. He has often been heard commenting on the animals' right to live, and has in particular stood for the protection of baby seals, polar bears and leopards, said reports. In 1999, another star, Brigitte Bardot, appealed on Putin to intervene and stop the slaughter of seals in Russia, and subsequently thanked him for the initiative he undertook.
