After four weeks of campaigning, three televised leaders’ debates and dozens of rallies, Britain finally goes to the polls today. This general election is the first real three-way contest in more than thirty years. Uncertainty on Britain’s decision day The final result is too close to call, however, with millions of people expected to make up their minds over whom to vote for within the privacy of the polling booth. The most likely outcome is a “hung parliament” in which no party wins an outright majority. Britain has not had an inconclusive election since 1974 and does not have the tradition of coalition-forming of its neighbours in continental Europe. The main exit polls will be published as polls close at 2300 CET with the official result expected early on Friday.
