Czech Vice-President Aleksandar Vondra said that the Nabucco gas pipeline has become a priority of the EU once again. The Nabucco pipeline will be financed with free assets from the Union’s budget, he said. Earlier, EUR 250mn was planned to be invested. The project calls for the construction of a pipeline from the Caspian region of Europe, bypassing Russia, and was listed as an EU priority on March 17, according to Russian agency RIA Novosti. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the project was determined as a priority on the insistence of the countries of central and eastern Europe, while Germany voiced the most opposition to the idea. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the EU has projects to invest budget assets into without the pipeline. Italy and France also voiced their concerned over whether the project is a necessity. The list of priority projects also includes a general European plan for stimulating the economy, which the European Commission presented in the fall. Along with other projects, the Nabucco pipeline represents the basic energy security of Europe and is expected to decrease the depends of the Union on gas coming from Russia, reports said.
