Demjanjuk, 88, currently lives in the U.S. and is suspected of taking part in the death of at least 29,000 European Jews. In December last year, the German court of last resort, the Justice Court in Karlsruhe, opened the possibility that Demjanjuk, who is of Ukrainian descent, be tried in Germany. He denies participating in Nazi war crimes and says he was a member of the Soviet Army. He says that in 1942 he was a prisoner of war and in 1950 he emigrated to the U.S, where he worked in the automobile industry. Israel tried him in 1980 under charges that, going by the name Ivan the Terrible, he was a guard at the Nazi concentration camp Treblinka in Poland. He was convicted of the charge but the Israeli Supreme Court overturned the verdict when evidence came to light that likely another man had been Ivan the Terrible from Treblinka.
