Slovakia will oppose the deployment of a U.S. missile defense shield in Europe, reports say. Beta news agency is quoting Prime Minister Robert Fico, who said his country will voice this stance at the NATO summit in Bucharest, scheduled for early April. Slovakia to oppose U.S. missile shield at NATO summit "It is incredible that Europe watches in silence as the new era of deployment of foreign troops on European soil takes place," Fico told the Czech public broadcaster CCT1. He at the same time reminded that "everyone was happy when Russian soldiers left Czechoslovakia". "I don't quite understand how the EU, which is constantly talking about a common security policy, now accepts to have elements of the U.S. missile defense here," Fico continued. He added the missile shield, which Washington plans to deploy in the Czech Republic and Poland, is not a matter of concern only for these countries, "but also, in a way, for Europe as a whole". The Slovak prime minister also voiced his doubt as to the efficiency of the system, "which is still developed and can be unreliable". "I miss a debate within the EU more than one inside NATO, since the EU is the institution that must make decisions about this space. If Slovakia were to be asked to deploy the shield, we would say no," Fico said. He also expressed hope that the U.S. will provide the Bucharest summit with an explanation as to why "nobody asked anyone anything, and we suddenly found out that American military elements are supposed to show up in the territory of Europe". Fico concluded that the U.S. missile plans "only bring nervousness to international relations, and divisions to NATO".
