A number of BBC journalists were among 11 people arrested by Irish police, AFP says. The police investigation was into paramilitary activities, the broadcaster confirmed Sunday. BBC journalists held in Ireland paramilitary probe "We can confirm that some of those arrested this morning in County Donegal (in northwest Ireland) were BBC journalists," it said in a statement from London, without specifying numbers. "They were working on a BBC Northern Ireland current affairs investigation and had appropriate editorial authorization under the BBC's guidelines. The other parties present were fully aware that they were BBC journalists." Gardai (Irish police) said in two separate statements that they had arrested seven men and then a further four men in the border county of Donegal. The arrests, made on Saturday and Sunday, "relate to ongoing investigations into paramilitary activity," the statements said. A Gardai spokesman refused to comment further when contacted by AFP. The BBC said on its website that the arrests were made under section 30 of Ireland's Offences Against the State Act, which allows police to question them for up to 72 hours without charging them. The 11 men, aged between 30 and 48, were being held at four police stations in County Donegal.
