Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili called for peaceful settlements of the Kosovo and Abkhazia crises. Speaking at the 44th Munich Conference on Security Policy on Saturday, Saakashvili said, “Georgia has never come against solving Kosovo’s problem. We voice concern over the methods that are used to solve this problem.” Saakashvili: Peaceful settlement in Kosovo, Abkhazia In his view, “the situation (in Kosovo and Abkhazia) is developing in a similar way. But Kosovars are victims of ethnic cleansing by [Slobodan] Milosevic and Abkhazs are winners of ethnic cleansing.” “We are ready to solve the problems of the 21st century – the problems of Kosovo and Abkhazia – by peaceful means,” the Georgian leader stressed. At the same time, he noted that conflicts should be settled on the base of “legacy and autonomy”. “We are ready to start a dialogue in order to reach a compromise,” he said. The Georgian president said his country “maintain close contacts with its neighbors and allies”. “Last year our economy grew by 12 percent. But we lost 70 percent of export because of Russia’s actions,” he added. On the 2007 incident – the allegedly bomb attacks on Georgia’s territory by Russian military, Saakashvili said, “We do not understand what the purpose of these bombing attacks.” Tbilisi and Moscow have different views on the missile incident of August 6, 2007. Georgia falsified the facts, said Colonel Pavel Akulyonok, chief engineer of Russia’s Air Force. He was member of the Russian expert group that investigated this incident. “Georgia falsified facts,” he told a press conference in Moscow. The Chief of Russia’s Air Force General Staff, Igor Khvorov, said the missile, which was found in Georgia on August 6, had been launched from Russia.
