Most media outlets ignore Press Freedom Day campaign

Some radio stations, including Radio Belgrade and 202 Radio did participate.

The association called on journalists and workers employed in the broadcast media to stop their programs from 11:55 a.m. till noon and on journalists working for the online and print media to carry its Proclamation on World Press Freedom Day.

The proclamation states that freedom of the media is under threat in Serbia because the journalistic profession has never seen harder economic circumstances.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić congratulated reporters on World Media Freedom Day, stressing that the new government would uphold the freedom of the press and pluralism.

"Our goal is to create a positive legal environment that respects the role of the media in society, which is why we are working on bringing three key media laws and a strategy, the adoption and implementation of which ought to significantly boost the media's independence, coupled with the steady financing of public TV broadcasters and the state's withdrawal from the media," Vučić's message said.

Ombudsman Saša Janković voiced the conviction that this year would finally see the adoption of a package of media laws that would pave the way to true reforms in the area and rid it of non-transparent influences and tabloidization.
