BELGRADE Tomislav Nikolic on Monday attended the Days of Africa event in Belgrade, to say he would promote stronger political cooperation with African countries. The Serbian president also pledged to work in favor of better cooperation in economy, education, sports and culture. President wants stronger ties with African countries Serbia has a long tradition of good relations with all countries in the African continent, Nikolic said and added that as the president, he is firmly committed to contributing to the reinforcement of all modes of cooperation between Nikolic and African countries. The Serbian president said that during his recent attendance at the Summit of the African Union in Addis Ababa, he voiced the wish of Serbia to continue several decades' long cooperation with African countries, on good grounds and with mutual respect on the basis of solidarity and brotherhood. Nikolic said that he is proud of the role of Serbia in the process of liberation of African nations and the contribution it gave in the fight against colonialism which was conducted by liberation movements. He also said that he is proud of the position of Belgrade in the Non-Aligned Movement and the education of thousands of African students at Serbian universities. He expressed the hope that the cooperation between Serbia and African countries will continue in the future and added that the scholarship programmes for foreign students will be aimed at African youth as well. Within its possibilities, Serbia will continue to contribute to multinational peace operations with the UN mandate in Africa, he said. Members of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Serbian police in Congo, Liberia, Somalia, Ivory Coast and soon in Mali as well will continue acting as part of international efforts for achieving peace in Africa, Nikolic said. The Days of Africa are organized to mark the anniversary of the agreement of the Organization of African Unity, signed on March 23, 1963, and this date also symbolises the fight of the entire African continent for liberation, development and economic progress. The celebration of the Days of Africa was staged at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade by embassies of Algeria, Angola, Guinea, Egypt, Congo, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunis. (Tanjug) Tanjug
