IJAS: Subtle pressure being put on media

President of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) Nadezda Gace said that “subtle” pressures are being put on the media in Serbia today. “It is not worse for the media now than it was during the time of Milosevic, but today there are 1,001 subtle pressures on the media and that cannot be allowed,” Gace said at a forum in Becej celebrating the 500th edition of the local daily Becejski mozaik. IJAS: Subtle pressure being put on media IJAS Vice-President Jelka Jovanovic said that journalists in Serbia face serious existential questions, adding that aid of about RSD 1mn has been paid into the IJAS Fund for Solidarity to help with these problems. She said that some of the people that are asking for help are big-name journalists who she learned from at the beginning of her career. Member of the Serbian Press Council Dimitrije Boarov said that the government is controlling all media outlets in Serbia. He said that the state needs to be completely “banished” from ownership in the media. Becejski mozaik Editor-in-Chief Vladan Filipcev said that local media are in a very difficult position, adding that they must receive subsidies from the municipal budget by way of competition in order to function.
