Cars with foreign and so-called economy, or commercial license plates that have not been re-registered, are banned from Serbia's roads starting today. According to a statement from the Serbian police (MUP), if identified on the road, such vehicles will be excluded from traffic with their license plates confiscated, while drivers face misdemeanor charges. Police outlaw cars that failed to re-register During the past three months – since the government made re-registration mandatory – 41,716 vehicles have undergone customs procedures, while the total figure regarding fees, customs and VAT collected in this way reached RSD 1.83bn. Some 33,000 cars are currently undergoing the process. Until they receive their Serbian license plates, car owners that already submitted re-registration requests should keep their vehicles off the roads. Those that did not, could solve their predicament by selling their cars in the country of original registration. The Finance Ministry said earlier that Serbia had more than 40,000 cars with Montenegrin and 1,500 with commercial plates at the time the government's decision was made.
