If you're a foreigner with a 12 month resident's visa for Serbia you may import and re-register your foreign car/motorcycle without paying import duty by asking for Serbian '99' plates. However, you must have been the registered owner of the vehicle in the country where it was originally registered.

Cars with foreign and so-called economy. Good percentage of the cars are stolen that are in Serbia are from Croatia and Bosnia. From the time of ethnic cleansing and murdered victims of the Serbs/Montenegrin war of aggression on Croatia and Bosnia. Their is going to be a big industry for false papers and bribes in Serbia to register the cars under the table. Hopefully the crime will not pay the criminals of those crime any more their needs to be a day of reckoning!

Is this only for Montenegro plate cars? Can I still but let's say a car with Swedish plates here in Serbia and drive it as a foreigner?

I drive cars with US plates. As long as you produce a foreign passport matching the license plates of your car + the insurance: no one will ask much. That's the practice and as you are well aware, that's what does count in both Serbia Proper / KiM and Hungary (that's what concerns me most).

Insurance is the trickiest part. Normally, GEICO does provide it, but their service in the States is much better than their overseas division. Their mood is somewhat down lately and they have basic issues with "green cards" not being printed on-time.

I am not sure regarding Swedish plates - US citizens who own Swedish cars is legally a different story than US citizens who own US cars - both somewhat easier (insurance) and somewhat more difficult (car/driver nationality does not match, more scrutiny to expect).

BTW: anyone can suggest me a good place to buy "Faqet e Verdha" valid for EU? The plates are American, not Kosovan.

The US insurance company is pretty much horrible, depends on semi-broken AIG group, many co-workers are laid off, who still there are not the best to deal with.

So I am looking for alternatives. Can buy in Hungary or in Subotica border border but it is somewhat expensive.
