The hacker attack on the Agriculture Ministry carries a 3-year sentence, says the special prosecutor for hi-tec crime. Lidija Komnen-Nikolic told Tanjug on Monday that it was treated as a criminal act that carried a maximum prison sentence of three years. "Hacker attacks carry 3-year sentence" She said that the prosecutor's office had to receive a report specifying the server and IP address from which the attack was carried out before any actual steps could be taken against the perpetrator. If the internet attack is found to have been carried out from abroad, the prosecutor's office may ask Interpol for more information on suspects from the country of origin. Stating that attacks on official Republic of Serbia websites were a result of incompetence on the part of people that had created them, Komnen-Nikolic underlined that the prosecutor's office could initiate international legal assistance proceedings, which, unfortunately, involved lengthy procedures. "Officially, if perpetrators do not originate from our country and if an attack does not originate from Serbia, domestic organs are not competent. In such cases, the prosecutor's office in the country of origin of such attacks is competent," she clarified. The prosecutor warned that domestic legislation did not treat hi-tec crime as it should, stressing that the attack on the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) website in the United States was treated as a serious crime, while under domestic regulations the penalty was a maximum one year in prison. So far, the SPC had not consulted either the police or the prosecutor's office in regards to the recent attack on their official website, she said. Komnen-Nikolic said that a group of hackers had been active in Kosovo and Albania for years now, and that statistical data on the countries where they had carried out their attacks were posted on their website. The official SPC website has been out of action since Monday morning due to a virus caused by the hackers. The website of the Ministry of Agriculture, after several hours offline on Monday morning, is now functional once again.
