The first of three rounds of elections for the Islamic Community (IZ) in Serbia passed without incidents yesterday. The organization is headed by Mufti Muamer Zukorlic. The rival Islamic Community of Serbia has snubbed the voting. The elections, which were called in keeping with the Constitution of the Islamic Community in Serbia, were not held in the Belgrade Bajrakli Mosque, which is controlled by the the Islamic Community of Serbia, headed by Adem Zilkic. The divisions within the two factions representing Serbia's Muslims see Zukorlic's followers spiritually inclined to Sarajevo, recognizing Bosnian Islamic Community leader Mustafa Ceric as their sole spiritual leader. At the same time, Zilkic's followers hold that the spiritual center is where the Muslims live, in this case, in Serbia. Today, the chairman of a commission set up to monitor the elections, Samir Skrijelj, told Tanjug that the Meshihat of the Islamic Community in Serbia is "very pleased with the turnout and expects that the elections will confirm the legality and legitimacy of the united Islamic Community in Serbia".

The Mesihat has announced that the entire election process might be finalized by mid-July, when the Islamic Community in Serbia is expected to appoint a new chief.

The elections, which were called in keeping with the Constitution of the Islamic Community in Serbia, were not held in the Belgrade Bajrakli Mosque, which is controlled by the the Islamic Community of Serbia, headed by Adem Zilkić.
