Norway to extradite Ovčara suspect to Serbia

Sireta, who has lived in Norway since 1998, is being investigated in Serbia for his role in inhumane treatment and murder of about 200 unarmed Croatian prisoners in Ovčara farm near Vukovar Croatia in November 1991.

Sireta was arrested in Norway on October 5, 2006, on a Croatian warrant issued through Interpol. Croatia requested his extradition on October 10 and Serbia on December 7, the court said.

On Monday, the Oslo district court rejected the Croatian request, saying its terms did not meet required human rights standards.

But the court granted Serbia's request, saying it found Sireta could expect a fair trial and treatment in Serbia, which guaranteed that he could not face the death penalty or be turned over to any other country.

"In the court's opinion, it also has to weigh heavily that this case concerns the inhumane treatment and murder of 200 prisoners of war, after they had surrendered their weapons," the ruling said.

B92 has learned that the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Trial Chamber will likely adjoin proceedings against Sireta with the trial of the suspects already charged with war crimes in Ovčara, that began on March 12, 2007.

The Trial Chamber sentenced 14 out of the 16 persons accused of war crimes in Ovčara to a total of 219 years in 2005, but the Supreme Court cancelled the verdict in December 2006, and ordered a retrial.
