Đoković captures Patience at Roland Garros

"I think he was the better play today, and he showed that in the second and the third set," the 20-year-old Đoković said in an on-court interview after the match.

World number six Đoković, considered to be one of the favorites to challenge top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Paris slam, was only able to break the Frenchman twice in 16 tries, having to prove victorious in two tie-breaks in order to collect the win.

Enjoying the overwhelming crowd support of the packed Suzanne Lenglen Court, Patience played wonderful tennis but finally slumped to Đoković's powerful rallies.

"There were a lot of crucial moments in today's match. I was trying to push myself to be aggressive, that's all," Đoković said.

"I always say after every match, I'm hoping that I am going to play better. I'm not satisfied, but I have to say that the most important thing is that I won. I'm looking just forward to the next step, next match, and I'm going to do my best to play better tennis," the Serb player said.
