Hungary declares Serbia safe country of origin

The Hungarian government has compiled a list of safe countries of origin and safe third countries, which includes Western Balkan countries, Serbia among them.

Hungary declares Serbia safe country of origin

According to the decree published in the Hungarian official gazette on Tuesday, the list of safe countries comprises all EU member states and four candidate countries- Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Turkey, the fifth EU candidate country is not on the list, Hungarian news agency MTI has reported.

Under the Hungarian decree, a safe country of origin is a country in which there is no war or persecution, while a safe third country is the one where asylum seekers have already arrived and where they can apply for refugee status.

In late June, the parliament mandated the government to determine safe countries from which Hungary will reject asylum seekers.
