Hungary's border fence plans "ill-advised" - CoE official

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on Wednesday that his counry will build a four-meter high wall along the 175 kilometers of border with Serbia to stop the wave of illegal immigrants.

He said that the authorities decided on the move after they registered that during the first six months of this year 57,000 illegal migrants crossed that border - mostly Syrians, Iraqis and Afghanis from war-torn areas.

The plan to build this was was also criticized yesterday by regional spokesperson of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Kitty McKinsey.

"The right to seek asylum is an inalienable human right. So we are concerned that erecting a fence would place too many barriers to this right," McKinsey told Reuters.
