Croatian President Stjepan Mesic is not happy about his country sending a note of protest to Switzerland. The note concerns Switzerland's ban on entry of pro-Ustasha singer Marko Petkovic, aka Thompson. Croatia sends protest to Switzerland, Mesic wonders why Mesic has sent a letter to Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic over this. The president’s office did not want to comment on the contents of the letter, but media states that Mesic sent a strong protest to Jandrokovic regarding the note sent to Switzerland by his ministry, after Thompson was banned from performing in the country for a period of three years. Mesic reportedly warned in the letter that “every country has the sovereign right to evaluate the conditions that endanger its national security, so Croatia has no reason to protest the Swiss decision, just as it would not allow anyone to question such a decision made by Croatia”. In that way, Croatia “is standing behind a controversial person who builds his image by flirting with neo-Ustasha ideas,” the media quote Mesic as saying. The Swiss government decided to ban Perkovic from entering the country for three years, stating that his songs promote extremist ideas, and that parts of the lyrics he sings promote violence, war and crime. Because of this, there is a danger that the singer's ultra-nationalist fans' outbursts could provoke Serbs and Bosnians who live in Switzerland, the explanation on the decision said, which could cause unrest within that country. The Croatian Foreign Ministry reacted by sending a diplomatic note to the Swiss embassy on Thursday, stating that the reasons from banning Perkovic from the country were unfounded, and that the singer "has never been prosecuted by any state for the crimes or acts that Switzerland accuses him of". The Croatian Ustasha regime was at the helm of the WW2 puppet Nazi Independent State of Croatia (NDH), responsible for running death camps, including Jasenovac.
