The Sarajevo Canton Prosecution has decided to launch an inquiry against SDP leader Zlatko Lagumdzija and fellow senior SDP official Tomislav Limov. An investigation will also be conducted against several staff at Sarajevo Central Prison and the Bosnia-Hercegovina Federation Police on suspicion that they illegally handed over members of the so-called Algerian Group to the U.S. authorities, who were subsequently transferred to the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay. SDP leaders charged over "Algerian Group" According to the office of Chief Canton Prosecutor Branko Sljivar, they are accused of unlawful deprivation of freedom and breaching citizens’ equality. Their acts were motivated by ethnic discrimination since the injured parties belonged to a semite group, originating from African and Asian countries, says the prosecution. In January 2002, the Bosnian authorities extradited six Bosnian nationals of Algerian extraction to their U.S. counterparts, since which time they have been held in custody at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The U.S. arrested them on suspicion of having links with terrorist organizations, though this has never been proved. The members of the Algerian Group are Belkacem Bensaja, Nesle Mohamed, Saber Lahmar, Boudela Hadz, Ati Idir Mustafa, and Bumedin Lahdar. They received Bosnian citizenship during and after the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina in the Nineties. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that the case was a “classic pre-election political witch-hunt by the Sarajevo Canton Prosecution.” “It’s indicative that the investigation is only being launched against two SDP members who held the positions of foreign minister and deputy interior minister, while key members of other political parties, who were most responsible, have been left untouched,” the SDP said yesterday. The party claims that the then chairman of the Bosnian Presidency, the Federation president, and the Federation’s interior minister were from Haris Silajdzic’s Party for Bosnia-Hercegovina (SBIH), and not the SDP. The SDP believes that the Prosecution has acted “under pressure”, and that “it’s all being done now that all authoritative opinion polls indicate that citizens will penalize the current government at the next local elections.”
