"We have no reason to be ashamed looking back" - president
"Why would we be ashamed of looking back when the Greeks, and all those who fought along us, respect us," Nikolic told reporters. The president noted that the WW1-era Serbian army, "that was in danger of ceasing to exist," lived to see one of its commanders, Petar Bojovic, decorated even by his former enemies.
Nikolic, who on Friday attended the anniversary of the Battle of Kaymakchalan, said his visit to Greece on Thursday came within the marking of the Great War, during which his country made a great contribution.
The president praised Serbia's ties with Greek authorities both at the state and regional level. Speaking about the Kaymakchalan anniversary, he said the heroic breakthrough on the Macedonian Front "did not exactly please the Allies - but the Serbian army could not wait."
Nikolic noted there was an area at Kaymakchalan where the battle against Bulgarian troops took place which Greece had given to Yugoslavia. This area contains the markings of the Macedonian Front breakthrough, a church and a chapel. When the country disintegrated, it became a part of Macedonia.
"Perhaps we should talk to Macedonian authorities about Serbia's right to cultivate its history in that place," Nikolic said.
They pointed out the importance of jointly preserving the memory of events from the past, like marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Kaymakchalan, in World War I.
During the meeting, Nikolic pointed out the dedication to the traditionally good relations between the two states and peoples, stated the Presidency of Serbia.
