Filip David has received this year's award for Best Book in the Network of Public Libraries of Serbia, in a ceremony held at the National Library of Serbia.

Award recipient "distances himself from Nikolic's presence"

David said he "never supported Nikolic's policy."

"I must distance myself from the presence of Tomislav Nikolic. Respecting the institution of the president, I have not supported his policy since the 1990s," said David.

The writer received his award from the National Library of Serbia Director Laslo Blaskovic, while the president presented the award for her contribution to librarianship to Library of the City of Belgrade Director Jasmina Ninkov.

Culture Minister Ivan Tasovac, who was present at the ceremony, said he was "convinced that culture does not pick sides, and belongs to everyone," and advised "choosing carefully the words spoken at the National Library of Serbia."

The president commented on the incident later in the day to tell N1 broadcaster that David's gesture "required neither courage, nor good manners."

The National Library on Friday celebrated its day along with National Book Day, to be marked on February 28.
