"Balkans and Caucasus will suffer unless IS is destroyed"

Chepurin said that terrorists "may never reach some distant countries, like Australia - but will certainly reach a large number of European countries."

"The most vulnerable areas are the Balkans and the Caucasus. We could sit back, wait and see what happens tomorrow - but unless they are destroyed, they will move on," Chepurin said of the jihadis.

He stressed that Russia and many other countries are facing a simple choice - "to wait for terrorists to win and come to our house, or to, all of us, grit our teeth and try to defeat them."

"They will return primarily to Europe and the regions where they came from. For that reason we are natural allies to Paris, Berlin, Rome and Belgrade," said the ambassador.

As he pointed out, "cooperation between Russian and French navies is important for Europe - because it is important establish joint mechanisms to solve this problem."

"The question of (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad's survival is of secondary importance. The most important thing is to defeat Islamic State," said the Russian ambassador, according to Tanjug.

Chepurin pointed out that the recent meeting in Vienna, dedicated to the crisis in Syria, showed there is now more "understanding and comprehension of the situation among some key international players," and expressed hope that the forthcoming meeting of OSCE foreign ministers in Belgrade will result "in some common agreement on the fight against terrorism."
