Vucic sends telegram of condolences to Valls

PM Aleksandar Vucic has sent a telegram of condolences to French counterpart Manuel Valls over the Wednesday terrorist attack in Paris.

Vucic sends telegram of condolences to Valls

"On behalf of the Serbian government, the people of the Republic of Serbia and myself, I want to express deepest condolences over the tragic loss of human lives in the attack in Paris," Vucic said in the telegram sent to Valls and added that "at such a moment, words of comfort for those who lost their loved ones are hard to find."

"We are appalled by the incident but we are also certain that the Republic of France and the great French civilisation, reputed for its tolerance, would know how to deal with the dangers of terrorism," Vucic underscored.

"The Republic of Serbia will use all its potentials to provide assistance in the fight against terrorism as the greatest global peril," Vucic said in the telegram and added that the Republic of France can always count on sincere and friendly support of the Republic of Serbia.

French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, in whose office 12 people lost their lives in the terrorist attack on Wednesday, is well-known for its caricatures of Muslim leaders, as well as popes and heads of state or government.

Although the extremist Islamic State recently threatened to attack France, the weekly posted on Twitter a caricature of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi around quarter an hour before the shootout.

As reported by Agence France-Presse, the list of victims includes the weekly's editor-in-chief Stephane Charbonnier, known as Charb, and three more caricaturists known throughout France as Cabu, Tignous and Wolinski.

After the release of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in 2012, Charbonnier received a number of death threats and has been under police protection since.

AFP notes that French media were targeted by terrorist attacks on several occasions since 1990 but no victims were recorded until today.
