Vojvodina government won't fall - Pajtić

"For two and a half years now I have been responding to unofficial and unconfirmed information, to stories about some anonymous person somewhere agreeing about something. I think it's irresponsible to comment on it," Pajtić told a press conference at the headquarters of the Democratic Party (DS) in Belgrade.

The Serb Progressive Party (SNS) - the ruling party on the state-level, where the DS is in opposition - has been trying to bring down the provincial government for some time, and recently proposed a broad coalition to replace it.

Pajtić also spoke about early local elections held in the town of Majdanpek over the weekend to say it was "proof that Serbian citizens are against the ruling coalition," accusing at the same time the SNS of "blackmailing and beating activists of other parties during the election process."

"This rapid increase in support for the Democratic Party is proof that Serbia is awakening, that an increasing number of citizens have had enough of incompetence, empty propaganda and aggression of the regime," said Pajtić.

According to him, the DS has received 13 percent more votes in Majdanpek than in the election "held six months ago."

The first data shows that about 23 percent voted for the DS there on Sunday, while the SNS is set to have absolute majority in the town hall with 47 percent of the votes.

"This result is not indicative of the real rating of parties, but it is indicative of a trend of rapid growth of support for the DS and its positioning on the political scene," said Pajtić.

The DS accused the SNS of numerous irregularities during the election in Majdanpek, such as problems with ballot paper printing and beatings of activists of the DS and the LDP.

"We already saw the same methods in the 1990s and the regime was toppled by citizens," he said, and added: " Therefore, I express surprise that the SNS thinks they can use the same methods, and fare differently."
